‘Kavanah’ is the
Hebrew word for direction, intention, or purpose. In its simplest meaning, it
refers to concentrating the mind in the performance of prayer. A famous saying
of the 11th century philosopher Bahya Ibn Pakudah is often quoted in this
regard: “Prayer without kavanah is like a body without a soul.”
